New York 2013: Subaru introduces XV Crosstrek Hybrid

A car with capability and conscience

Subaru aims to be the brand that has the most fuel-efficient and lowest-emission AWD hybrid crossover in America with the introduction of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The hybrid model is based on the XV Crosstrek crossover and promises to offer the same amount of utility and versatility as the gasoline model.

The XV Crosstrek Hybrid makes use of the standard 2.0-liter Boxer engine that's coupled to a 13.4 hp electric motor that's integrated into the car's Lineartronic CVT. The hybrid system weighs 209 lbs. and is approximately only 300 lbs. heavier than the gasoline version of the XV Crosstrek.

Even though Subaru has to make some modifications on the XV Crosstrek Hybrid's chassis to accommodate the added weight of the 13.5kw nickel-metal hydride battery pack and electric motor, it still shares the gasoline model’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and chassis capability like ground clearance and wading depth.

In addition to some changes on the chassis, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid added extra sound insulation, a start/stop feature, revised HVAC, new gauge cluster, and keyless engine start function.

The hybrid system works by using the electric motor for initial vehicle acceleration and low-speed operation, once the vehicle gains momentum, the gasoline engine will be fired up. The electric motor can also provide assistance to the gasoline engine for added power output.

To set this hybrid model apart, Subaru applied several 'HYBRID' badges on the crossover and painted it with an exclusive Plasma Green Pearl paint job.
