Lexus pulls the wraps off the new 2016 RX luxury SUV at the 2015 New York International Auto Show.
With the debut of the Lexus NX late last year, it was only a matter of time until the RX got a major redesign. In line with Lexus' design language, the spindle grill remains and draws many of its cues from the compact NX.
The new RX adapts a more sloped roofline and its third window is pinched to make the car appear more dynamic. At the front, the spindle grill is bolder and wider than its predecessor and the headlights are more rakish and aggressive. At the back, wraparound LED tailights embrace the rear with the center of the rear resembling the spindle grill up front. There are two exterior lines available for the new RX, the standard model and the F-Sport. The F-Sport has a more aggressive front grill design, a deeper chin spoiler and 20 inch wheels.
Inside, the new RX gets a bigger infotainment screen and a color head up display as an option. The infotainment system can be controlled via the center mouse which differs from the NX's touch pad system. The dash is trimmed with high quality leather and wood with soft contact points wherever your hands go. Moving to the back, the second row seats split 60:40 and have the ability to fold with a push of a button to ease the task of folding the seats. Opt for the F-Sport model and you get custom F-Sport gauges with TFT Multi Information Display. The sport steering wheel comes with an F-Sport logo by the base of the steering wheel and comes with paddle shifters.
Ride and handling are enhanced by what Lexus calls the Adaptive Variable Suspension. AVS monitors the road condition via its shock absorbers and then adapts the car's damping to the conditions. The system has three modes: Eco, Normal and Sport. For the F-Sport models, Sport+ mode is available along with an active stabilizer system.
The RX will come with two powerplants. The RX350 will come with a direct injection 3.5 liter V6, putting out 304 PS (market dependent) and is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The RX450h also comes with a 3.5 liter V6 but aided with by Atkinson Cycle electric motor. Its combined output is rated at 304 PS, the same as the purely engine propelled version but is expected to consume less fuel.
The 2016 Lexus RX will be the fourth generation of the model.
