Hardtop Minis won't be the only ones to get a more souped-up engine and chassis after the British automaker arrived at this year's New York International Auto Show with the John Cooper Works (JCW) Convertible. Essentially the soft-top version of the revered JCW, Mini described their latest offering as 'the most exclusive way of enjoying extreme driving fun'.

Like its hardtop counterpart, the JCW Convertible gets better aerodynamic properties, tuned 2.0-liter powerplant, racing-derived suspension system and custom cabin finish.

Starting with the most apparent addition is the fully electrically operated roof that is made out of textile. It can be deployed in 18 seconds of up to speeds of 29 km/h and has improved Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) properties. Mini also said that it has a stretched silhouette, shorter overhangs and widened track for a more sporty appearance. Completing the side décor are 17-inch JCW alloy wheels.

Over to its front, full LED headlights with chrome accents provide the necessary illumination. It also has a hexagonal grill with red accent and large air inlets that deliver better engine cooling and aerodynamics for the JCW Convertible. The rear gets the familiar combination taillights, ventilated bumper and centrally-mounted exhaust pipes.

Rounding off the exterior finish are JCW badging and Rebel Green paint with JCW black-red stripes on the hood.

Inside, the four-seater convertible has Mini's distinct interior design mixed with added sporty flair. Hues of red, gray and black enveloped the cabin. The seats are upholstered in both leather and Dinamica microfiber while chrome accents provide contrast to the bright red finish.

Ever present is the steering-rack mounted instrument panel, along with Mini's touchscreen infotainment system and multifunction steering wheel. The rear seats can now carry child seats thanks to ISOFIX anchors, and in the event of a rollover, two high-strength aluminum bars will immediately deploy to keep the occupants safe.

Under the hood is a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-four that cranks out 231 PS at 6,000 rpm along with 320 Nm of torque at 1,250 rpm. With those figures, the 6-speed manual model can go from 0 – 97 km/h in 6.4 seconds. When fitted with the optional 6-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox, it can do the same feat in only 6.3 seconds. Top speed for the manual model is rated at 241 km/h while the automatic tops out at 239 km/h.

Other driving technologies that come as standard on the JCW Convertible include: Brembo 4-piston calipers, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Electronic Differential Lock Control, Performance Control, Mini Driving Modes (Sport and Green modes) and Torque Steer Compensation.
