Mercedes-Benz's latest compact, the CLA, gets a slight upgrade for 2016 with a refresh of its exterior, interior and powertrain. Slated to make its official debut at this year's New York International Auto Show, the company is set to deliver a more 'sporty, expressive' design for both the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake.

Beginning with the front fascia, all variants get new bumpers with silver, black or chrome strip, along with a black diamond radiator grill. The rear, on the other hand, can now be specified with a new panel trim that sits between the tailpipes. It will be available in either black or chrome finish and are now integrated flush onto the rear bumpers.

There are now a total five wheel designs that all come in 18-inch sizes. The latest wheel design comes in the form of a five-twin-spoke design which is in conjunction with the AMG Line.

Moving inside, it gets new seat covers, trim pieces, as well as chrome-plated controls. In terms of equipment, it now has the optional 8-inch media display. It is slimmer and features a new glass cover. The instrument panel was also given attention as Mercedes-Benz also introduced new-style dials and red needles to it easier to read. Matte black ash wood, black microfiber, and aluminum with honeycomb grain trim are just some of the new interior pieces that will spruce up the CLA's cabin.

An array of diesel- and gasoline-powered motors will be available for the 2016 CLA. Starting with the former, engine displacement ranges from 1.5-liter to 2.1-liter. Power output, on the other hand, start at 109 PS with 260 Nm, all the way to 177 PS with 350 Nm.

Moving to gasoline, engine size ranges from 1.6-liters to 2.0-liters. Power from the 1.6-liter motor range from 122 PS with 200 Nm of torque, all the way to 156 PS with 250 Nm of torque. For the 2.0-liter, it begins at 184 PS with 300 Nm of torque, and ends at 218 PS with 350 Nm of torque.

At the top of the range is the CLA 45 4MATIC which is propelled by a tuned 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. It generates 381 PS along with 475 Nm of torque.

Depending on the variant, the CLA can be equipped with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch gearbox.

Mercedes-Benz will be arriving at the 2016 New York International Auto Show with the sedan version only as the Shooting Brake is set to be revealed at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin this April.
