Acura set the stage for their refreshed premium SUV’s debut at the New York International Auto Show. While the MDX enters the show with a bold exterior refresh, apparently there is more than just a new face in store for the three-row SUV. The MDX, apart from its standard powertrain, will eventually come out with Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-wheel Drive (SH-AWD) as well. This powertrain is pretty much what you’ll find on Acura’s flagship model, the NSX.
Even a quick glance over the MDX already makes its updated look very evident. Its distinctive diamond pentagon grille highlights Acura’s new design language, and to accompany this design a bunch of other details have been altered as well. The hood, front fascia, and front fenders have all been sculpted a bit more sharply to match the aggressive profile of the grill. The lighting department has received its fair share of changes as well, with LED foglights and re-styled ‘Jewel Eye’ headlights. Out back the MDX receives a revised rear bumper as well as a twin tailpipe exhaust.
For safety, the MDX also comes with the full array of AcuraWatch technologies that allow for various safety countermeasures to be implemented via camera and radar. Assists such as lane departure warnings, advance cruise control, and forward collision warnings all fall under the host of AcuraWatch’s safety features.
The interior of the MDX is where plenty of changes happen, with Olive Ash Burl or Black Limba interior wood trim, a SiriusXM Radio 2.0 sound system, and and ultra-widescreen rear viewing system for entertainment among the changes.
“Upping the performance pedigree of the MDX with bold styling, our exclusive Sport Hybrid powertrain and the standard application of AcuraWatch technologies that many in the industry refer to as semi-autonomous, represents a major injection of Acura’s Precision Crafted Preformance DNA,” says John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “These changes will continue to advance MDX’s competitiveness and its legacy as the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time.”
The upcoming Sport Hybrid version of the MDX will be powered by a 325PS 3.0 Liter DOHC V6 engine mated to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox sending power to the front wheels while twin electric motors send power to the rear wheels.
