Infiniti highlights new design direction in luxury SUVs with QX80 Monograph
Infiniti is indeed keen in changing up the design direction of their large luxury SUV. Making its world premiere at the 2017 New York International Auto Show is the QX80 Monograph. It's a design study that aims to explore the future of upscale luxury, as well as to signify their continuing development in the segment.
According to Infiniti, the QX80 Monograph blends luxury and space with a futuristic design never seen before. Designed at Infiniti's design studio in Atsugi, Japan, the QX80 Monograph hints at a forward-looking design with the use of Infiniti's new design direction.
“The QX80 Monograph provides the opportunity to reimagine Infiniti's signature design DNA on a totally different scale. We sculpted our body pure, straight and horizontal, the muscularity both brute and sensual; part Rodin's Thinker, part Michelangelo. Infiniti used svelte satin copper skin, set off by an ultra-powerful double arch grille with abstract structural mesh, distinctive and focused human eye signature headlamp, and iconic fender vent. Our designers continue to impress by finding new avenues for Infiniti artistry,” said Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president, global design of Infiniti.
The concept measures over 5,000mm long, more than 2,000mm wide and almost 2,000mm tall (with the roof rails). The defined character lines that dominate the QX80 Monograph actually make the car longer accordng to Infiniti, particularly the shoulder line that runs the entire length of the SUV.
The eye-catching headlights and the blacked-out grill give the SUV a sophisticated feel. The extra chrome and aluminum trim pieces provide additional eye-candy as well. Improved aerodynamics comes courtesy of an underbody cover which also acts as added protection from the rough terrain.
The large 24-inch alloy wheels finished in chromium black deliver a purposeful and powerful stance. Meanwhile, the rear gets slim combination taillights, cleanly designed tailgate and a large spoiler mounted on top of the tailgate.
Also worth noting is its frosted-effect paint finish. According to Infiniti, the desaturated color and satin texture works in contrast with the brightwork.
"The QX80 Monograph represents a detailed study into our expertise of exterior design. QX80 Monograph shows our concept of luxury and style on the road, and is an exploration into how we could enhance our future INFINITI offering in the luxury SUV segment,” said Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti.
The QX80 Monograph could become the basis of Infiniti's next-generation luxury SUV.
