The Jaguar F-Type gets a new engine option for the 2018 model year update. First launched with a V6 which was then closely followed by a high-output V8, the 2018 F-Type is now available with a small yet powerful turbocharged engine. Displacing 2.0-liters, the new four-cylinder turbo serves as the F-Type's new entry-level engine and will only be available with rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Part of Jaguar's series of Ingenium engines, the new engine benefits from a twin-scroll turbocharger, integrated exhaust manifold and an electronic variable intake valve lift. On the other hand, the turbo system now has ceramic ball bearings which Jaguar claim will reduce turbo lag and improve overall performance. The result is 300 PS along with 400 Nm of torque which is available from 1500 – 4500 rpm. It has a claimed 0 – 97 km/h time of 5.4 seconds and can reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
"The 300 hp Ingenium petrol engine is engineered to deliver a compelling blend of performance, refinement and efficiency. Cutting-edge technologies including electrohydraulic intake valve lift control, integrated exhaust manifold and a twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings make this the most advanced petrol engine we’ve ever produced,” said Ron Lee, engineering director of powertrain at Jaguar Land Rover.
The lightweight engine also meant Jaguar was able to play around with the front axle. Compared to the supercharged V6, the 2.0-liter turbo inline-four weighs 52 kg less. This allowed Jaguar to reduce the front and rear spring rates by four- and three-precent respectively. In addition, the lighter engine improved the front/rear weight distribution. The electronic power steering system was specially calibrated as well for the F-Type 2.0L turbo to fully make use of weightsaving and at the same time, deliver better feedback and input.
Over to the coupe's exterior, Jaguar opted to retain the sweeping lines and aggressive styling from before. New, however are the LED headlights, slightly reshaped LED taillights and the revised front bumper and air intakes. Also present is a new wide front grill. The entry-level 2.0L comes with 18-inch wheels as standard and comes with a staggered tire setup. The front sits on 245/45 while the rear gets 275/40. A bigger set of wheels are available as optional extras and will range from 19- to 20-inches.
