Electric vehicle company NextEV is ready to roll out their first mainstream vehicle in the form of a pure EV crossover. Dubbed the ES8, it will be the second car produced by NextEV under the NIO brand. NIO says pre-orders have begun and deliveries to customers will begin sometime in 2018 for the Chinese market.
The ES8 is billed as a seven seat crossover in the E-segment category. The large crossover boasts a unique front fascia treatment with slim LED headlights and an aggressive grill and apron design. Defining the side profile are pronounced wheelarches and a kinked-up window line towards the rear. U-shaped LED tail lights and a wide tailgate are the highlights of the rear fascia.
Inside, the cabin employs a wraparound dashboard and in the center is a large, tablet-like touchscreen serving as the vehicle's infotainment system. Also fully digital is its instrument cluster which can also display navigation functions while relaying relevant driver information. Instead of the traditional gated drive selector, it gets a toggle to flick from reverse, neutral and drive and, to park, the button is located on the side of the switch.
With dual electric motors, the Nio ES8 gets all-wheel drive and produces 644 PS and 840 Nm of torque. They claim a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds plus a range of over 350 kilometers per full charge. It then rides on air suspension and has a set of Brembo brakes on all four corners.
Besides the performance and range figures, the Nio will allow future ES8 owners to swap out batteries should they need one with a full charge. Nio estimates that a battery swap will take three minutes to complete. They will also be offering a service that sees one of the company's vans going to the owner's location for a 10-minute charge, giving a boost of 100 kilometers in the range.
