Nissan Motor Company has just issued a global recall of certain models produced from 2013 – 2016. Amounting to 3.53 million vehicles, Nissan said that the affected units may not deploy their passenger-side airbags due to faulty sensors.

Nissan elaborated that the occupant sensing system might fail to recognize someone sitting on the passenger seat, or deem them as small children (passenger airbag will not deploy in this scenario). So far, Nissan has announced that there have been three reported injuries as a result of the faulty component.

Nissan vehicles that are a part of the recall include the Altima, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Sentra, Rogue, NV200 and NV Taxi. Affected Infiniti models, on the other hand are the JX35, QX60 and QX50. Chevrolet's City Express, a rebadged Nissan NV200 also had to be recalled. In the U.S. alone, 3.2 million vehicles are part of Nissan's global recall.

Nissan will notify their customers, while owners of the Chevrolet City Express will be contacted by General Motors.

As a way to remedy the faulty component, dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (OCU) in the Altima, Maxima, Murano Rogue and Sentra models. The Leaf, NV200, NV Taxi, Pathfinder, JX35, QX60, QX60 and Chevrolet City Express will have their OCS units replaced however.

There is no word yet from Nissan Philippines, Inc. (NPI) if there are any Altima models (sourced from the US) sold here that are part of the said recall.
