It looks like Nissan’s recent financial & profit woes have already resulted in the company axing one of their models. Remember when Nissan was supposedly planning to reduce its product portfolio? Well it appears that victim number one is not a passenger vehicle. Instead, it's the Titan XD Diesel.
According to a report by The Drive, the automaker plans on stopping production of the diesel-powered pickup truck this December 2019. There is currently no word yet as to how many more will be made, but the company did say that a gasoline-powered engine will replace the diesel V8.
What’s the reason behind the stop in production? Beside the company’s recent fall in profits, apparently, a spokesperson told the online publication that the refreshed 2020 model of the Titan and Titan XD will come with a gasoline engine that will better position Nissan in the long term.
First revealed back in 2015 (as a 2016 model year), the Titan XD served to go up against the likes of the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, and the ever-popular Ford F-150. Its 5.0-liter Cummins V8 puts out an impressive 314 PS and 752 Nm of torque, allowing it to have a maximum towing capacity of 5,443 kg.
But despite those figures and accolades, Nissan was only able to sell 2,242 Titans altogether last month in the US. The Ford F-150, on the other hand, was able to sell about as many Titans in just one day. That meant the Nissan Titan XD, along with the rest of the Titan range, are not performing well in terms of sales.
However, Nissan is still committed in building the next-generation Titan as a refreshed model is set to be revealed soon. But does this mean the Filipino-designed Nissan Titan Warrior Concept will no longer be built? With the company still wanting to build such a vehicle, perhaps the only change the production version will receive is a gasoline engine. And with the Ford F-150 (and its Raptor variant) still making waves, Nissan is looking to have something that can go toe-to-toe with it like the Titan Warrior.
Let’s hope that despite the eventual death of the Titan XD Diesel, the Titan Warrior Concept will still happen in the not-so distant future.
