Toyota Motor Philippines and Lexus Manila Inc. assures customers who purchased vehicles through official Toyota and Lexus dealers are not affected by the vehicle recalls in the United States and Europe. The said North American recall affects 2.3-million vehicles. Selected Toyota plants in North America and Europe has temporarily stopped production and sales of the affected vehicle models as it fixing the problem.
Toyota has pinpointed the issue that could, on rare occasions, cause accelerator pedals in recalled vehicles to stick in a partially open position. The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper "feel" by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable. The device includes a shoe that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation. Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open. Toyota North America and Europe has assured customers that it will fix the affected vehicles.
The US model vehicles affected by the said recall are: 2005-2010 Avalon; 2007-2010 Camry; 2009-2010 Corolla, RAV4 and Matrix; 2007-2010 Tundra; 2008-2010 Sequoia; and 2010 Highlander.
The European recall on the other hand is said to involve as much as 1.8-million vehicles; the follow-up action in Europe is merely precautionary as Toyota is not aware of any accidents caused by the said issue. European models affected are: 2005-2009 AYGO; 2008-2009 iQ; 2005-2009 Yaris; 2006-2009 Auris; 2006-2009 Corolla; 2009-2010 Verso; 2008-2009 Avensis; and 2005-2009 RAV4.
Toyota's engineers have developed and rigorously tested a solution that involves reinforcing the pedal assembly to eliminate the potential risk of excess friction that could, in rare instances, cause the pedal to stick.
All the said vehicle models are assembled in North America and Europe; these in no way affects vehicles being sold through official Toyota distribution channels in the Philippines. The Camry and Corolla are assembled in Thailand, while the RAV4 comes as a CBU (completely built-up) vehicle from Japan. Customers are likewise welcome to bring their vehicles to any Toyota dealer for a free checkup for their peace of mind.
In the event that a driver experiences an accelerator pedal that sticks in a partial open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and road-side assistance company should be contacted. Furthermore, the transmission can also be shifted to the neutral position to further prevent acceleration.
Buyers of Toyota vehicles from non-official sources (grey market dealers) are advised to contact their seller or their respective US Toyota dealership for more information with regards to the recall.
