As most Filipinos celebrated the announcement that the Philippines has been chosen to host the Miss Universe pageant in January 2017, the news have also caused motorists to express concern over the amount of vehicular traffic that such an even can cause.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) has come out with a statement promising commuters and motorists that this event will not cause as much traffic especially when compared to last year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conventions as most of the pageant events will be held outside of Metro Manila.
"The maddening traffic mess is obviously the one single problem that beset our daily economic activities in Metro Manila, and we will find ways so as not to aggravate this with the hosting of Miss Universe," said Wanda Teo, Secretary of Tourism.
Davao, Vigan, Palawan, Cebu, Batangas, Isabela including Cagayan de Oro, the hometown of reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, are potential venues for the Miss Universe pocket events.
“Pageant events will be held outside Metro Manila at tourist destinations like Palawan, Cebu, Batangas and Isabela to avoid creating inconvenience to the general public”, added Teo.
A 12-agency group called the Philippine Host Committee (PHC) led by the DOT has also been formed and it is composed of the Office of the Executive Secretary; the Department of Public Works and Highways; Foreign Affairs; Trade and Industry; Information and Communications Technology; Interior and Local Government; Transportation; Health; Bureau of Immigration of the Department of Justice; Bureau of Customs and Bureau of Internal Revenue of the Department of Finance; Philippine National Police; and the Manila International Airport Authority.
Aside from coming up with a solution to the potential traffic jam the Miss Universe pageant is going to cause, the PHC is also tasked to facilitate the arrival and mobility of each and every Miss Universe candidate along with their security at each venue.
