Honda, formerly one of the biggest clients of Takata, has issued a technical service bulletin in its home market of Japan. The automaker is urging its customers to get the airbag inflator replaced immediately as the faulty part may cause serious injury or even death.
The faulty inflator, when exposed to high heat and humidity, degrades the ammonium-nitrate propellant in the part which causes the airbag to deploy too quickly and violently. As a result, it may send shrapnel to the occupants inside. The US National Highway Transport Safety Administration (NHTSA) has called the Takata inflators a “ticking time bomb.”
For this TSB, Honda will be replacing the inflators for the front airbags as well as the side airbags on selected models. The automaker is constantly reminding customers to get the part replaced and this latest bulletin comes after two inflator related deaths reported in Malaysia. In the US alone, an estimated 50 million cars are affected by the recall and over 100 injuries and 4 deaths have been attributed to the exploding inflator. Apart from Honda, Several companies have already dropped Takata as their airbag supplier including Ford, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota.
Honda listed several models for inflator replacement. These include the MDX, Fit Aria (2003 to 2009 City), Odyssey, Inspire (2003 to 2008 Accord), Civic FD, Pilot, Fit (Jazz) and several Japan-only models. The total amount of cars affected in Japan has reached over 700,000 units.
Last March, Honda Cars Philippines Inc (HCPI) began recalling certain model years of the CR-V, City and Jazz from 2011 to 2014. The safety campaign is part of the global Takata airbag recall. To date, there have been no deaths or injuries related to this issue in the Philippines. HCPI is also urging its customers to have their airbags checked for replacement.
