BMW has just released photos of the 2 Series Convertible ahead of its debut in the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October. The new convertible will succeed the BMW 1 Series Convertible.
The front fascia features the signature twin bar kidney grill that slant slightly forward and is adjoined by a pair of dual headlights that can be fitted with the optional HID lights. In addition, a LED accent light sits across the top of the headlights. Air curtains are integrated onto the front bumper of the car, which serves to channel the passing air behind the front fenders, lessening turbulence inside the wheel arches according to BMW.
The shoulderline of the car rises at the rear of the car and blends in with the horizonatal lines of the trunk lid, creating a wedged-shape that “captures the forward-surging urgency” of the car. Additional lines that run from the doors and side skirts of the car towards the rear fender form a compelling shape that highlights the car's rear-wheel drive orientation. The taillights use LED lighting and stretches along the rear fenders and creates a L-shaped figure.
A multi-layered fabric soft-top is used on the 2 Series Convertible that opens and closes in just 20 seconds. It can be operated within up to 50 km/h and has improved soundproofing than the 1 Series Convertible, cutting interior noise by 5db at the front seats and 7db at the rear. The roof can be remotely operated as well if one opts for the comfort access key. The roof comes in black as standard but is also available in two other colors; Anthracite with silver effect top and Brown with silver effect option.
Inside, the German automaker says they delivered a “driver-focused cockpit” with the instrument panel, center console and door trim using the overlapping principle called “layering”. The audio controls are set adjacent to high-gloss black surfaces while the air vents have a chrome trim. Storage for the 2 Series Convertible is ample as two 46-inch golf bags or two snowboards can be placed at the trunk when the rear seats are folded down, enabling a through-load storage arrangement.
A 2.0-liter inline-four twin turbocharged engine that generates 240 PS at 5000-6500 rpm and 345 Nm of torque at 1450-4800 rpm will power the 228i Convertible. When coupled with the 8-speed automatic gearbox, it will do the 0-97 km/h time in just 5.7 seconds. Those that prefer a AWD system can go for the 228i Convertible xDrive. It can do the 0-97 km/h in 5.6 seconds and has a normal torque split of 70% at the rear and 30% at the front in normal situations. For the M235i Convertible, it will be powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 320 PS at 5800-6000 rpm and 447 Nm of torque at 1400-4500 rpm. It can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 8-speed automatic and can go from 0 -97 km/h in 5.0 seconds.
