The local luxury crossover scene has been busy for the past few months. First out of the gate for 2019 was Audi who launched the all-new Q8 back in February. It was then followed by BMW who revealed the all-new X5 the following month. BMW then surprised the public once more with the launching of the flagship X7 a few weeks ago.
Now, Auto Nation Group, the official distributor of Mercedes-Benz in the country, has joined the party as well after revealing the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE. Featuring a sleeker & more prominent design, along with a plethora of new technologies, the fourth-generation GLE (formerly called the ML) has its sights set against the other luxury marques with its sleek new look, array of standard tech, and potent turbo-diesel engine.
Beginning with its exterior, the GLE now has a more rounded design while still maintaining its sculpted look. Up front, there's a new grill along with fresher-looking LED headlights that come with distinct LED daytime running lights. Large 21-inch alloy wheels, black body cladding, as well as running boards give the GLE a more rugged look and feel. New wraparound LED taillights give the GLE an unmistakable look and are accompanied by trapezoid-shaped exhaust pipe finishers and a rear skid plate.
Thanks to the GLE's sleeker shape, Mercedes-Benz claims it now has a better drag coefficient of 0.29 cd, one of the best in the segment. In addition to its redesign, the GLE is now slighty bigger, too. With the wheelbase gaining an additional 80mm, rear legroom and headroom have increased to 69mm and 30mm respectively. And like its predecessors, the new GLE still comes with seating for seven people.
Like all new Mercedes-Benzes offered today, the new GLE gets an avant-garde style cabin. Fine Artico leather blankets the seats, and is complemented by neat touches of gloss trim, metal accents, as well as soft-touch materials. Placed at the dashboard are two 12.3-inch monitors that make up the new MBUX infotainment system and multi-info display. With it, voice control, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, as well as other media features are fitted as standard.
Other standard in-car amenities inside the GLE include power-adjustable front and rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, Burmester surround sound system, adaptive cruise control, heated / ventilated seats, power tailgate that can be opened via a kicking motion, front and rear parking sensors, Parktronic active parking assist with 360-degree around-view monitor, and tire pressure monitoring.
Only one engine option is available for the 2020 GLE; the 300d turbo-diesel. It's a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 245 PS along with 500 Nm of torque at 1600 - 2400 rpm. Power is then sent to all four wheels via a 4Matic all-wheel drive system and 9GTronic nine-speed automatic.
In terms of safety, the new GLE comes with a host of airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, blind spot assist, active brake assist, adapative LED headlights, electronic stability and traction controls, and keyless go with hands-free access.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d is selling at a special introductory price of Php 5,690,000.
