At the Philippine International Motor Show, Eurobrands Distributor, Inc. official importer of Peugeot vehicles in the Philippines displayed two shining examples of its ongoing motor sports efforts.
Besides the outlandish 208 T16 Pikes Peak replica, Peugeot offered a more attainable vehicle, the custom-built Peugeot 208 GTi to serve as a participating vehicle in one of the country’s upcoming racing events of the year: The 2016 Targa Manila.
Developed by Tuason Racing, Targa Manila will be the first premium car rally powered by Peugeot Philippines. It is an on-time rally following the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format. Rather than aiming to traverse a given course or stage in the fastest time, a TSD format give competitors an “ideal” time which they must attempt to match. Penalties while be handed out for being too early or too late. Surprise checkpoints will also be placed to ensure competitors travel the prescribed course. Like the typical rally format, vehicles will be released at intervals. The competition is open to 2-door sports cars and 4-door European cars, each with their own divisions.
24 teams, each composed of a driver, navigator, and optional time navigator, will compete each other in an attempt to consistently arrive on-time. All races originate from Manila to different parts of the country.
“This is Peugeot’s first venture into the local motorsports scene,” said Karen Carvajal, Marketing Director of Peugeot Philippines. “Organized together with Tuason Racing, it will be an unforgettable experience for both car fans and spectators alike,” she added.
The teams are composed of various celebrities, car enthusiasts, influencers, and members of the automotive media. A total of eight Peugeot 208 GTi’s will be joining the line-up of participating vehicles.
“The Targa Manila is a perfect venue for us to showcase our motorsport heritage. That is why we we are lending as many Peugeot 208 GTi units as we can,” Carvajal said.
Targa Manila will take place on September 24, 2016 at the Manila Polo Club. Event partners are Motul, TuasonRacing.com, Foil-A-Car, Cars and Coffee Manila, Networx, AutoIndustriya.com and C! Magazine.
