Toyota Motor Philippines is set to debut the fourth generation of their long-running hybrid, the Prius. This will be the second iteration of the Prius in the Philippines as Toyota attempts to make local consumers aware of hybrid technologies.
This all-new model rides on the new Toyota New Global Architecture or TNGA. Like the last two models, the 2016 Prius features a Kammback profile, with the tail end of the car abruptly cut off for aerodynamics. It follows the design theme set by the Mirai and features “boomerang” head lights and tail lights. The headlights have been swept upwards, almost reaching towards the front pillars, while the rear tail light blends into the character line on its side. Despite the lightened platform, the all-new Prius has grown in dimensions. It is now 60 mm longer, 15 mm wider but 20 mm lower than the previous model.
Inside, the Energy Monitor screen layout has been redesigned for this model with a larger, clearer color display. It also features a new infotainment system with a larger screen compared to its predecessor. A new three-spoke steering wheel, as well as the shape of the air vents have been redesigned. Like the current generation Prius, it comes with a small gear lever. The increase in exterior dimensions translates to a more spacious cabin and improved cargo space.
The 2016 Prius is powered by a 1.8-Liter, four-cylinder engine with VVT-i. It utilizes an Atkinson cycle for its hybrid system with a compact permanent-magnet electric motor and separate generator. Combined output of the gas and electric motor is rated at 120 PS and 142 Nm of torque. It shifts via Toyota's E-CVT and power is shifted to the front wheels. The new powertrain is said to boast a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy and a 40 percent improvement in thermal efficiency. The 2016 Prius now comes with smaller nickel-metal hydride batteries which, Toyota says, charge faster and are more durable.
