Plug-in hybrid BMW X5 can do 80 km on electric power alone


2019 BMW X5 gets a new plug-in hybrid variant

It was only back in June when BMW introduced the next-generation X5 which featured a complete redesign to stay up to date with the brand's current design language. Now, the Bavarian automaker has rolled out a new electrified variant of its midsize SUV, the X5 xDrive45e. The new plug-in hybrid serves as a replacement for the previous xDrive40e and boasts improvements to the hybrid system, offering more power and better range.

Under the hood, the electrified X5 uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine which develops 286 PS and works with an electric setup which produces 112 PS. Combined, the xDrive45e produces a total system output of 394 PS and 600 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to an intelligent all-wheel drive system via an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.


Along with an increase in power, the X5 xDrive45e also has better range. BMW claims the plug-in hybrid SUV can do up to 80 km on electric power alone thanks to an improved lithium-ion battery pack.

While designed for efficiency, the plug-in hybrid X5 is also no slouch. Thanks to the bump in power, the xDrive45e can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds. It can also go faster on electric power alone, reaching a top speed of 140 km/h. When used with the gas engine, top speed is rated at 235 km/h. BMW also claimed that the xDrive45 e is capable of averaging 2.1 liters / 100km at best.

The X5 xDrive45e is fitted standard with a two-axle air suspension system and electronically controlled dampers. Optional goodies available include active four-wheel steering. The electrified X5 also has less cargo volume by around 150 liters compared to the non-electric assisted models. With the seats up, there is only 500 liters of space available. 

Visually, there are no changes between the conventionally powered X5 and the electrified variant except for the badging. The same can be said regarding the interior.
