The electric revolution is continuing to make waves in the auto industry, with some gunning for delivering swift performance and generous cruising range. Polestar, which serves as the electric brand of Volvo, has released yet another creation that blends style, practicality and zero emissions into one neat package.
Say hello to the 2020 Polestar 2, the company's answer to the Tesla Model 3. Billed by the company as a premium five-door fastback, it is Polestar's first fully electric car meant for mass volume. It's built on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform which is also seeing use in some Volvo and Lynk & Co models like the XC40 crossover and 03 electric sedan.
It features the company's 'avant-garde' design derived from Polestar 1, giving the fastback a modern and futuristic appearance. The front fascia features the brand's signature grill and is flanked by a set of LED headlights. Further highlighting the Polestar 2's sporty nature are the huge 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires. Finally, the electric fastback gets C-shaped taillights at the back that give it an unmistakable look.
Stepping inside, you are immediately greeted by a minimalist interior and a huge 11-inch tablet-inspired touchscreen display. According to Polestar, it is one of the first cars in the world to come with an Android-powered infotainment system. This gives the Polestar 2 easy access to Google services and apps. From having to use Google Assistant and Google Maps, to browsing the Google Play Store, everything is within easy reach in the Polestar 2's onboard system.
Besides that, the Polestar is also equipped with a wide array of smart systems like a smart cabin system which recognizes a driver's personal settings, an instrument panel that can show real-time information like how much charge is left in the batteries, as well as what devices may be connected to the system.
Driving the Polestar 2 is an all-wheel drive electric powertrain that delivers over 400 PS and a stump-pulling 660 Nm of torque. It gets its power from a 27-module battery pack that is integrated onto the floor which helps in giving the Polestar 2 a more rigid structure. This gives the Polestar 2 an estimated range of 500 km and a 0 – 100 km/h time of less than five seconds.
The Polestar 2 is now available for online ordering and will have a price range from EUR 39,900 – 59,900. There will also be a subscription plan available soon. Production of the Polestar 2 will begin in China in early 2020 and will be available for global markets in both left- and right-hand drive.
The all-new electric fastback will make its official public appearance at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show this March.
