Porsche may be known for building fast cars such as the 911 and the Cayman, but it also knows a thing or two about making fast SUVs and crossovers. The newest model to join their SUV lineup even has nearly the same power as the 911 Turbo S. What's more interesting is that it accelerates faster than a Cayman GT4. Meet Porsche's new super SUV – the 2022 Cayenne Turbo GT.
The Turbo GT is based on the Cayenne Coupe but packs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 640 horsepower and 850 Nm torque. An 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox then sends power to all four wheels. For reference, it has an additional 90 horsepower and 80 Nm torque over the Cayenne Turbo Coupe. However, it's still not as powerful as the Turbo S e-Hybrid. That model packs 670 horsepower, which is assisted by an electric motor.
Thanks to the boost in power, the Cayenne Turbo GT can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, and hit a top speed of 300 km/h. Porsche also claims that it can do the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds.
Since this Cayenne bears the GT name, power isn't everything. Porsche also tweaked the chassis and suspension for better handling. The Turbo GT sits lower, rides on stiffer adaptive dampers, and is paired to a more aggressively setup three-chamber air springs. Meanwhile, the rear-wheel steering, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control systems have been retuned for optimized performance.
The result? The Cayenne Turbo GT is the new SUV king of the Nurburgring. Porsche's new SUV managed to record a 7:38.9 lap around the Green Hell; that's roughly as fast as the current-generation BMW M5.
To distinguish it from a standard Cayenne Coupe, Porsche also made changes to the Turbo GT's exterior. The front bumper has wider air intake vents paired with a slightly revised fascia. At the rear, the GT packs a carbon fiber rear diffuser with a center-mounted dual exhaust setup. At speed, a large adaptive rear spoiler deploys with an integrated Gurney flap. Rounding up the changes are the carbon fiber roof and the roof spoiler.
Unfortunately for fans of the traditional Cayenne, the new Turbo GT variant is available exclusively for the Cayenne Coupe in a four-seater configuration. Over in the US, the 2022 Cayenne Turbo GT retails for USD 182,150 or roughly PHP 8.9 million. Considering how popular Porsches SUVs are in the country, we won't be if surprised PGA Cars will start offering it locally.
