Earlier this year, Volkswagen teased us with a futuristic version of the ever popular Mircobus (Kombi), called the I.D. Buzz. Volkswagen had previously mentioned that the all-electric I.D. Buzz will head into production, but did not mention any plans or launch dates. At the recently concluded Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance, the German automaker has announced that the production-version I.D. Buzz is slated for a 2022 release.

"After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, 'please build this car’,” Dr Herbert Diess, Volkswagen CEO said in Pebble Beach.

The production I.D. Buzz is expected to remain faithful the concept. It will still use a fully-electric powertrain, with floor mounted batteries. Power output on the concept is rated at 374 PS courtesy of two electric motors, but is still uncertain whether the production version will have the same power. Like the rest of Volkswagen's I.D. line, the production model is also expected to ride on the new MEB platform with level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.

Production Volkswagen I.D. Buzz set for 2022 release

For it's exterior, do expect that the design will still follow the form of the iconic Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus, also known as the Kombi. Inside, Volkswagen says they will “incorporate many design ideas from the concept car, including multi- variable seating, interactive connectivity”.

Like the original Kombi, Volkswagen will produce the I.D. Buzz in both passenger and cargo versions. Expect the cargo variant to also be using the same fully-electric powertrain as the passenger variant. Volkswagen did not mention however whether it will be released at the same time as the passenger version come 2022.
