The government has found a major ally in its war versus the traffic crisis, public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers.
Leaders of various transport groups met with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Tim Orbos last Saturday as part of the agency’s consultative planning with stakeholders to discuss proposals and reactions regarding current anti-traffic methods and schemes.
Present at the meeting were Obet Martin of Pasang Masda, Zeny Maranan of Fejodap, Efren de Luna and Orlando Marquez of PCDO-ACTO, and Boy Vargas of Altodap.
Transport leaders expressed their support to the MMDA’s revised number-coding scheme, indicating that it has decreased travel time, which in turn has allowed PUJs to make more trips that benefit commuters in the long run.
They were amenable to President Duterte receiving emergency powers, including ‘supervisory authority of the MMDA over traffic enforcers of the 17 local government units in Metro Manila’ while agreeing that the MMDA should have the power to suspend the driver’s license of repeat offenders of traffic violations.
An appeal was also made by leaders of the public transport groups to all private and public motorists for discipline in following traffic rules and regulations even without the presence of traffic enforcers.
Practicing what they preach, transport leaders also vowed to police their ranks in order to show the public that they too have discipline on the road.
“Kami na ang mangunguna at kami mismo ang pupunta sa kalye, hihikayatin naming ang aming mga miyembro at sususpendehin namin sila sa membership namin kung sila ay may record ng ilang ulit na huli,” they said.
[We will lead by example and go to the streets to encourage our members. We will suspend their membership should records show that they are repeat violators.]
Lastly, transport leaders also asked the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and Land Transportation Office to keep up their efforts in keeping ‘colorum’ vehicles out of the streets.
