Reports have come in regarding a high performance variant of the X1 courtesy of BMW's M Division. A source within BMW told Motoring Australia that the German car maker is considering an M version of the company's smallest crossover. The source said that an X1 M makes sense but BMW has yet to make a final decision.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, BMW is also considering a plug-in hybrid model for the X1. BMW is likely to make a desicion quicker regarding the eco-friendly X1 since the company has made plug-in hybrid models for the all-new 7 Series and the recently updated 3 series. The company has also made a prototype plug-in hybrid model with the X1's platform mate, the 2 Series Active Tourer.

At the moment, the most powerful X1 on sale is the xDrive25i variant with 231 PS while the most efficient X1 available is the sDrive18d which does a claimed 24.3 kilometers per liter according to European fuel economy cycles.

If greenlit for production, it is highly possible for the X1 M to have over 300 PS and all wheel drive. It is yet unknown if BMW will equip the X1 M with a six cylinder engine based on the M235i, let alone if it will go into production. The X1 plug-in hybrid on the other hand might get the 2 Series Active Tourer hybrid prototype's set up with a three cylinder, 1.5 liter turbocharged engine with 136 PS mated to an electric motor that gives another 88 PS.

BMW is studying the market if there will be demand for these kinds of models in its segment.
