Patent drawings show an upcoming three-row Jeep SUV

As far back as 2015, excecutives from Jeep have been wanting to revive the Wagoneer name as their flagship SUV. Later that year, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, confirmed that the Wagoneer will indeed make a comeback and is pitched against the likes of the Range Rover, Lexus LX570 and similar models in the segment. It now appears that it is closer to reality.

Taking a closer look at the leaked images, one can easily make out Jeep's iconic seven slat grill. The front end of the patent shows more detail however, and it bears a passing resemblance to the Yuntu, a concept Jeep unveiled during this year's Auto Shanghai. The side profile of this mystery Jeep shows the similatities between the concept and this particular patent image. Also noticeable is the extended rear section, hinting that this Jeep will be a seven seater. Overall, this patent drawing shows styling that is also similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

At the rear, it sees a more upright tailgate compared to the rest of the Jeep line (sans the Wrangler). Slim, wraparound tail lights also defines the rear fascia, along with an integrated rear spoiler. Body cladding surrounds the entire lower half of this Jeep while a pair of roof rails to complete the look.

On a side note, this is not Jeep's first attempt in building a three-row SUV. Back in 2005, the American automaker launched the Commander, designed to slot above the Grand Cherokee. The Commander was later dropped in 2010

One thing for certain however is that the images do look encouraging as it previews an almost production ready model. Jeep has yet to reveal any more information about the Wagoneer/Yuntu but FCA recently invested $1 billion in their Michigan plant. That report also said that the Wagoneer is slated for a 2018 debut.
