Lamborghini plans to set new Nurburgring SUV record with the Urus
In the span of 2017 alone, several manufacturers have attempted to best various production lap records around the Nurburgring. Lamborghini was previously crowned fastest production car around the Nordschlife with the Huracan Performante. However, it was recently dethroned by Porsche with the 911 GT2 RS after it set a 6:47.3 lap.
Next spring, Lamborghini will be returning to the Green Hell once again. This time around, the Italian marque will be unleashing the recently unveiled Urus and attempt to establish a new record for fastest production SUV. Currently, the position is held by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio with a 7:51.7 lap time.
According to CAR Magazine UK who spoke with R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini will be waiting for a 'warmer season with good weather' before going for a record attempt to improve their chances of beating the time. Reganni also said that he is confident that their high-peformance SUV is capable of besting the record time comfortably.
On paper, the Urus produces 658 PS and 850 Nm of torque from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. Power is then sent to an all-whee drive system via an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. Lamborghini claims the Urus goes from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and tops out at 305 km/h. An Aventador S dervied rear-wheel steering is also in place to improve handling.
Should Lamborghini be successful in beating the SUV lap record, expect them to release a video of the Urus' attempt similar to that of the Huracan Performante. As for whether the Urus can truly take on the Green Hell, we will just have to wait once Lamborghini attempts for a lap record.
