'Road Rover' to be Land Rover's first attempt in the D-segment
Times are a changing in the automotive industry and Land Rover might just see its biggest shift yet. The British automaker has long been known to build highly capable 4x4's, regardless of the size. Now, it has been reported that they will be building a station wagon before the decade ends.
Tentatively named the Road Rover, it is slated to compete against the likes of the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It is yet to be known if the Road Rover will be a sedan or a 'shooting brake', a station wagon with steeply raked tailgate. Given that the next-generation Jaguar XJ is under development, it is possible that this road-oriented Land Rover might share its chassis from the said flagship sedan.
Traditional internal combustion engines and electric powertrains are expected to power the Road Rover. At the same time, its chassis will most likely to made from aluminum, as with all Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles. These new architectures are said to accommodate either engines or battery packs. All-wheel drive is another realistic possibility for the Road Rover. However, given that Land Rover has been rolling out front-wheel drive versions of the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque, two wheel drive models are also likely and, in this case, rear-wheel drive.
Similar to the Velar, the name Road Rover harks back to Land Rover's development models from the past. Its name harks back the the 1950's when brand was planning to build a model less utilitarian-looking than the original Land Rover Series 1. Road Rover was the first name of the SUV that would eventually become the Range Rover.
The Road Rover is expected to be unveiled by 2019, during that year's Los Angeles Auto Show.
