Long live the Lancer! Mitsubishi Lancer fans can rejoice as the Japanese automaker has reportedly started development on the next-generation model of the popular Japanese car.
Mitsubishi Motors North America Executive Vice President Don Swearingen told Wards Auto that the company has begun in-house development of the next-gen Lancer.
Subsequently, Mitsubishi is still seeking to partner with another automotive manufacturer to cut production costs. But if a partnership doesn't materialize, Mitsubishi has begun parallel development of the next-gen Lancer.
“We’re running parallel because we cannot wait any longer to see if a partnership will work out. If it falls through then we’re another year behind,” Swearingen said.
Swearingen also said that Mitsubishi is currently in talks with another manufacturer however the executive declined to elaborate but reports suggest that the company hopes to partner with Nissan.
If a partnership is formed by the end of the year, the model would still reportedly be 18 months away before its completion.
