Toyota's version of the Lexus' F-series high-performance line? It seems very likely. A recent report by Automotive News says that Toyota Motor Corp. could soon be unveiling an all-new 'sports car' line, similar to that of their luxury division's counterpart.
It is said that the all new line will be launched in September next month at an event in Japan. Furthermore, a Toyota representative told Automotive News that the unveiling is geared towards Japan instead of overseas. Unsurprisingly, he declined to further comment about the event, or what products will be shown.
Currently, the only 'sporty' vehicles that Toyota offers is the GT-86 and the recently unveiled Yaris GRMN. Given what we know about Toyota's latest development, it seems likely that the Toyota Supra could be spearheading this new performance/sports car line. Furthermore, a performance line could hint that more products could be offered in the future, possibly a successor to the MR-2 or a production version of the S-FR Racing Concept pictured above.
Earlier this month, Toyota made key management changes specifically in their motorsport division, Gazoo Racing, prompting us to believe that it could become its own brand. With this new report, it seems that Toyota Gazoo Racing could become an all new performance line instead. Given that, it is possible that other GRMN models may be added in the future apart from the rumored Toyota Supra.
As details are scarce at the moment, it is unclear whether Toyota's September announcement would only be presenting their new line and products in future, or also preview the upcoming Toyota Supra successor. If not, at least we are a bit more certain that Toyota is likely to enhancing its model lineup with performance oriented vehicles.
