Some things are best kept the way they are. Mercedes-Benz appears to going for that route as Automotive News recently reported that the next-generation G Wagen will keep its iconic shape.

Gordon Wagener, Daimler AG's chief design officer, said that the G Wagen is undergoing a redesign and will have new components all around. The only thing that will be left untouched is its boxy exterior.

Report: Next-gen Mercedes-Benz G Wagen to keep boxy shape

"You have to keep it boxy. You have to treat it very responsible, otherwise it wouldn't be a G. So it still has to be edgy,” said Wagener.

Beyond that, the designers also plan to make the next-gen G Wagen look a bit more mature and clean up the exterior a bit more.

Last November 2016, our spies were able to spot what looked to be the next-gen G Wagen in prototype form. While the the SUV still bears some camouflage, Mercedes-Benz did retain the signature boxy profile. However, our insiders did notice that the prototype appears wider than current models.

It may also be underpinned by a new platform, along with new lightweight engines. With it, our spies guessed that the next-gen 4x4 could shed up to 180 kg. An AMG version might also be in the works which could be powered by the familiar 4.0-liter biturbo V8.

It is highly likely that the all-new G Wagen could make its world debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
