Hyundai is out to prove that they can make hot hatchbacks not only for rally racing, but for the road as well. Aside from the i30 N, the Korean automaker apparently plans to expand their hot hatch lineup with an even smaller five-door.
In an interview with Auto Express UK, Albert Biermann, head of N Performance, said that they are not limiting themselves to just the C-segment.
“Why would we limit ourselves to C-segment? There are tons of hot superminis out there - Polo GTI, Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 and even Toyota now is doing one. There’s a good market out there,” said Biermann.
If Hyundai is indeed serious, then their latest hot hatch could be based off the i20. A tuned 1.6-liter turbo inline-four with nearly 200 PS could power the i20 N and may come with an electronic differential. As for its exterior, the i20 N may also receive some subtle revisions that reflect its sporty pedigree.
Recently, our spies recently spotted the 2018 i20 facelift. Set to have a sleeker design, the soon-to-be-released i20 refresh could become the basis of the i20 N hot hatch.
