Retro-inspired Prototype 10 is Infiniti's love letter to speedsters, EVs

Past meets Future in the Infiniti Prototype 10 EV

A retro-inspired speedster for the modern era? Infiniti likes to think that such a car for the 21st century and beyond is still possible.

After releasing a 3D render of the all-electric speedster last week, Infiniti has officially unveiled the sleek and shiny Prototype 10. Combing classic design cues from the past and marrying it to high-tech electric propulsion systems, the Prototype 10 embodies Infiniti's 'creative and ambitious plans for electrified performance'.

“The Infiniti Prototype 10 echoes the layout and design of early speedsters. This period saw the creation of some of the most evocative car designs of all time, where power was celebrated through high-powered single-seat competition cars. Our new concept speaks of an electrified future, something which is reflected in its form and details. It is appropriate that we found inspiration in an optimistic bygone era in which cars were characterized by the simple love of driving,” said Karim Habib, Executive Design Director at Infiniti.

In designing the Prototype 10 concept, Habib and his team of designers approached it by taking what they know from iconic designs of old, and blending it with their own styling cues. The result is a retro-modern look that combines the classic long hood, short deck design with Infiniti's new design language first seen on the Q Inspiration concept. Clean flowing lines dominate the entirety of the Prototype 10 which works well with the silver finish.

As seen earlier, the Prototype 10's cockpit is inspired by single-seat formula race cars from yesteryear. It has an uncluttered design which helps the driver see out better and not get distracted. In keeping with the simplistic theme, Infiniti said that the cockpit only comes with a driver's seat, four-point harness, brake and accelerator pedals, and a distinctly-shaped steering wheel. The seat itself is heavily bolstered to provide a snug for the driver and possible maximum lateral support. Beyond that, the seat is set low inside the cockpit to help in lowering the center of gravity.

Inifinti was tight lipped regarding the Prototype 10's exact inner workings. However, they did mention that the concept will serve as a testbed for Infiniti's future EV and E-Power powertrains. With a modular platform, it will allow the company to install such powertrains in new and creative ways in chassis of all shapes and sizes. From SUVs to sedans and sports cars, electrification is the way forward according to Infiniti.

By 2021, Infiniti stated that all of their models will feature electrified powertrains. The Prototype 10, along with the Prototype 9 and the Q Inspiration concepts will represent the company's forward direction towards electric mobility.
