Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV officially named after largest-ever diamond

New Rolls-Royce SUV to be the "Crown Jewel" in its lineup

It has been somewhat of an open secret, but now it's official: Rolls-Royce, the premier manufacturer of ultra-luxury automobiles (or should we say motor cars?), has confirmed that their SUV will be called the Cullinan.

The massive Rolls-Royce SUV fittingly takes its name from the largest ever diamond found; a 3100+ carat gem-quality diamond that was mined in Africa and later cut to become part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.

“It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product. Cullinan is a motor car of such clarity of purpose, such flawless quality and preciousness, and such presence that it recalibrates the scale and possibility of true luxury," said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce first announced that they were working on a “high-bodied car that would redefine luxury” and that it would be “effortless, everywhere”. Spy photographers in Europe had been catching the Cullinan SUV testing in various states of disguise and camouflage to mask its lines and details.

The Cullinan will be the latest in a series of SUVs in the luxury and ultra-luxury sector. In recent years, many manufacturers who have been traditionally making sports cars, super cars and premium automobiles (i.e. Bentley, Lamborghini) have ventured out of their respective comfort zones and engineered SUVs due to their appeal globally.

In the press statement, the company referred to themselves as the “House of Rolls-Royce” and that they had been testing the vehicle in African and Middle Eastern deserts, the Arctic Circle, the canyons of North America, and the Scottish Highlands in order to make sure that their SUV can withstand the conditions in places where their customers would take it.

Rolls-Royce says the Cullinan will be the second model to use the new aluminum spaceframe that they call “Architecture of Luxury”.

“Just like the Cullinan Diamond, the largest flawless diamond ever found, it emerges when it is perfect and exists above all others,” continued RR's CEO.
