With most automotive brands today allocating resources in developing better urban mobility, comfort and autonomous driving, technology firm and interiors supplier Johnson Controls will be demonstrating a new vehicle seating concept that automakers will use by 2020.

Called the SD15, the concept is placed on a curved track that focuses on a new first- and second-row seating that eliminates the need of a separate and complex mechanisms found on traditional car seats.

All seats are electronically adjustable and feature a console mounted control that moves with the occupant for easier manipulation. Moreover, the mounted control also features a wireless charging function for recharging smartphones and other gadgets.

It also has slim head restraints that has a built-in tilt function for better head comfort. The use of a thin design is ideal for seat configurations where space is limited as claimed by Johnson Controls.

The passenger seat sits on long tracks so that it can slide forward and be stowed against the instrument panel or slide back to increase luggage space. Meanwhile, the second row can be slid between two and three-seat configurations, for better flexibility in seating or luggage space.

Upholstery-wise, the seats feature ink-jet fabric technology which makes for a wide array of customization options.

Perhaps the most important feature of the concept is that it is made to hold a 48-volt battery under the seats. As most brands nowadays are trying to incorporate more electrically-powered features inside cars, a 48-volt battery system appears to be a good prospect for the future. In addition, it will also be able to shoulder electrically-powered power steering and turbo chargers.

It is set to have its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
