Mazda highlights lightweight construction of new MX-5 with two concepts

Mazda has arrived at this year's Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show with two MX-5 concepts. Set to highlight the lightweight engineering of the fourth-generation roadster, the two concepts feature a vintage exterior design that is both functional and appealing to the eye, according to the company.

“Both MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster are uncompromising designs that highlight the core strengths of MX-5. The all-new 2016 MX-5 served as a blank canvas for our design team to create some truly one-of-a-kind cars, yet our SEMA concepts remain true to more than 25 years of MX-5 heritage,” said Ken Saward, Design Manager, Mazda North American Operations.

Beginning with the Speedster finished in Blue Ether, Mazda described the concept as a return to the essential 'wind-in-the-hair' driving experience. The windshield has been replaced with a wind deflector and is reminiscent of open-top race cars of the old days. Rounding off the exterior revisions are the 16-inch RAYS Extreme Gram Lights wheels, 225/50/R16 Kumho Ecsta tires and a center mounted exhaust from Racing Beat.

Inside, it has bespoke lightweight Mu-Len Delta seats constructed from carbon fiber and upholstered in Alcantra and doors that are also made from the lightweight composite.

Other modifications installed on the car include: adjustable K&W coil-over suspension and front Brembo four-piston brake calipers with vented discs. Ultimately, the concept only weighs 943kg, 113kg less than standard models.

Over to the Spyder finished in Mercury Silver, Mazda stated that it's their take on a classic vintage roadster. Its key feature is the bikini top that was developed by American Sunroof Corporation. Its fabric, however, was supplied by Haartz.

It also has a carbon fiber aero kit, grill intake, and body toneau cover. It rides on custom 17-inch Yokohama Advan RS II wheels wrapped in 225/45/R17 Advan A048 tires.

The interior, on the other hand, is upholstered in 'Prima' natural leather by Spinneybeck.

Much like the Speedster, it also has adjustable coil-over suspension and front Brembo four-piston brake calipers with vented discs.

Both concepts are powered by the 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine that puts out 160 PS at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm.
