NLEX Corporation is kicking things into high gear in expanding the 8.2 – kilometer Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX). After starting work last July, NLEX Corporation recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially signal the start of the milestone project.
Leading the groundbreaking event were NLEX Corporation president and general manager Luigi L. Bautista, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman & Administrator Wilma Eisma, Bataan Mayor Antonio Joseph Inton, and Toll Regulatory Board Executive Director Abraham Sales.
“One of the key drivers of economic growth is a network of high-quality roads. The NLEX Corporation through NLEX, SCTEX, and the soon-to-be expanded SFEX not only intends to accelerate development, but also hopes to encourage travel convenience and road safety,” said Bautista.
Aside from the groundbreaking ceremony, a ceremonial tree was also planted. This signifies the company's commitment to plant more trees to replace those that had to be uprooted for the expansion project. Bautista added that they will continue planting trees in order to help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to cleaner air.
In review, the SFEX Capacity Expansion Project will see the construction of two additional lanes, two new bridges at Jadjad and Argonaut, as well as a new tunnel. The new bridges and the tunnel will be built parallel to the existing ones, with the latter resembling a horseshoe design for better structural integrity.
Moreover, the Php 1.6 billion project will also see the installation of LED lights to improve night time visibility, the raising of the Maritan Highway-Rizal Highway-Tipo Junction, and the enhancement of the drainage system to help alleviate flooding in the area.
Target completion of the SFEX Capacity Expansion Project is set for September 2020.
