Ford confirms return of the Shelby Mustang GT500, arrives next year
It looks like Ford is done playing second against the Dodge Hellcat. Come 2019, Ford is set to unleash the all-new Shelby Mustang GT500. Ford claimed that it will be their most powerful GT500 (and Ford model) to date and will have a projected output rating of more than 700 PS.
Based on the teaser video, the 2019 GT500 may come with large carbon-ceramic disc brakes, a new rear diffuser and a sportier exhaust system. In addition, the new GT500 may also benefit from a new aerokit, as well as carbon fiber rear wing, chin spoiler, and hood louvres.
Other details regarding the GT500 remain scarce but the company did mention that it will be capable on both the track and on the road. It will also be equipped with new track-tailored technologies, as well as track-tuned styling.
Under the hood will of course be a supercharged V8. However, it is unclear as to what specific V8 will power the new GT500. Our best guess is that it will be an upgraded version of the 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 that is seeing use in the GT350 and GT350R.
A six-speed manual will most likely be the transmission of choice like all Shelby Mustangs of the past.
When officially launched in 2019, the new Shelby Mustang GT500 will be twice as powerful as the original 1967 model.
