Student teams from Asia and Middle East arrived in Manila for the upcoming Shell Eco-marathon Asia which will take place on Febuary 7 - 9, 2014. Along with the student teams are the fuel efficient vehicles that they have built and designed. In total, there will be 109 students who will compete in the fifth edition of Shell’s annual Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

This year, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia will take place in Luneta, Manila having previously held at the Sepang Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With this, the design and overall built of the student’s fuel efficient vehicle will be tested on the road rather than on a race track. The team who can drive farthest on a liter of fuel will be the winner of the said event.

Enjoying the luxury of a home court advantage, the Philippines has a total of fifteen teams from our country’s top engineering schools. They will compete against students from universities, colleges and technical institutes across fifteen countries.

“We are very excited to be hosting the Shell Eco-marathon Asia in the Philippines. As you know, this will be the first time that the competition will be held in an urban circuit, giving students a chance to apply their technical knowledge to creating vehicles that can run in a real world setting.” said Roberto Kanapi, Vice President for Communications of Shell Philippines.

In the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia, students have an option of joining on two different categories which are the Prototype vehicle or UrbanConcept vehicle. In the Prototype vehicle category, student teams should build a car of the future wherein streamlined vehicles focused on maximizing fuel-efficiency through innovative design elements, such as drag reduction. On the other hand, the UrbanConcept vehicle category will focus on more “roadworthy” fuel-efficient vehicles. As a whole, there a total of 71 Prototype and 38 UrbanConcept vehicles for this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

Both the Prototype and UrbanConcept vehicle can be equipped with the following energy types: gasoline, diesel, alternative gasoline (ethanol 100), alternative diesel (Shell Gas-to-Liquid or fatty acid methyl ester), battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell. Student teams have the freedom to create and incorporate their design concepts as long as it meets specific safety rules.

Winners and runner-ups in the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon Asia will receive a prize money of $2000 (PHP 90,561) and $1000 (PHP 45,281) respectively. Furthermore, Shell will also give Off-Track awards such as Communications, Vehicle Design, Technical Innovation, Safety, Perseverance and Spirit of the Event and Shell Helix Tribology Award. The Shell Helix Tribology Award is an off-track award that recognizes student teams that demonstrate the use of lubrication engineering principles to improve the fuel efficiency result of their vehicles.

Last year's Shell Eco-Marathon Asia was supposed to take place on the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia, but due to the haze the contest was cancelled.
