The pickup truck segment is on the uptake this year as every major manufacturer is fielding a new generation model in the class. The current generation Chevrolet Colorado was launched in 2011 followed by the Ford Ranger, though the latter will be refreshed soon. THe Isuzu D-Max was brought to market in 2013 along with the Mazda BT-50. This year Nissan launched the new NP300 Navara with coil-spring rear suspension as well as the new Mitsubishi Strada.
Now it's Toyota's turn, as they have just revealed the 2016 Toyota Hilux in Thailand.
The Japanese automaker seeks to redefine the 'tough pickup' segment by marketing it as a very capable truck with an emphasis on passenger comfort and ruggedness. Scheduled to have its Philippine launch sometime in August, we take a look on how will the next-generation Hilux measure up against other pickups on sale today.
Based on the figures, the 2016 Hilux is now second longest pickup in the segment just behind the Mazda BT-50. In terms of width however, the Hilux will be the fourth widest pickup. The 2016 Hilux does have a decent height but it's still lower than its predecessor.
Note: All measurements are based on range-topping variants.
