Heads up: Motorists living in northern Metro Manila will experience a bit more traffic than usual as San Miguel Corporation's Citra Central Expressway has officially started work on Skyway Stage Construction 3 in NLEX Balintawak last February 9, 2019.
With it, both the MMDA and NLEX Corporation will be implementing a major traffic rerouting scheme in and around the surrounding areas to make way for construction. This will allow the San Miguel Corporation-led Citra Central Expressway (CCEC) to proceed with construction immediately at the certain portions of NLEX Balintawak.
Traffic along Balintawak, Cloverleaf, Camachile, Bagong Barrio, and east and west service roads will be affected by the road project. However, certain lanes along NLEX Balintawak were widened in order to accommodate a smooth flow of traffic still.
“The NLEX Corporation is extending its support to the project aimed at solving traffic congestion in Metro Manila as it is also one with the government in improving the country’s transport and logistics industry,” said Raul Ignacio, NLEX Corporation Chief Operating Officer.
Vehicles coming in from NLEX going to Quezon City may use Smart Connect Interchange heading to Mindanao Avenue as an alternate route.
Meanwhile, private and public transport vehicles from Quirino Highway bound for EDSA via Camachile are advised to head to Camachile Flyover, turn right at West Service Road, then make a right towards EDSA. Public utility jeeps (PUJs), on the other hand, have to make a U-turn to Biglang Awa, turn right at Cloverleaf to A. Bonifacio (heading to Blumentritt), or take the southeast loop to return to Novaliches.
Trucks coming in from Quirino Highway that are bound for A. Bonifacio will not be allowed at Camachile. Instead, these trucks will have to make their way to Mindanao Avenue, turn left at NLEX Mindanao entry going to Smart Connect Interchange, and head towards NLEX southbound. The same goes for trucks that will come from A. Bonifacio / Port Area.
For cars and other vehicles heading to Port Area from EDSA Munoz, they will need to head to Monumento crossing Balintawak Cloverleaf, make a left at De Jesus Street, head straight to C3, then after reaching C3 intersection, make a right to Port Area.
Besides the rerouting scheme, the MMDA, NLEX Corporation and CCEC will be working with local government units (LGUs) to guarantee that traffic enforcers will be deployed to manage the flow of traffic within the construction itself, and along the alternate roads. Moreover, additional traffic signages will also be put up to guide motorists.
"We are appealing for the patience and understanding of the public, but we are also assuring them that MMDA, NLEX, and Skyway teams will exert all efforts to minimize travel delays despite the ongoing construction,” said Jojo Garcia, General Manager of the MMDA.
CCEC plans to complete the project by December 2019 in order to alleviate traffic congestion for motorists that travel from north to south and vice versa.
