Newly passed bill approves renaming of NLEX to Corazon Aquino Expressway
The House Committee on Public Works and Highways has passed a bill that will rename the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to Corazon Aquino Expressway (CAEX), if passed into a law.
Corazon C. Aquino was the very first female president of the republic and was an important figure during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution that was sparked due in part to the assassination of her husband former Senator Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr.
Chaired by Benguet Rep. Ronald M. Cosalan, the committee approved House Bill 4820, which was filed by Nueva Ecija Rep. Magnolia Rosa C. Antonino.
"If favorably passed into law, it will constantly remind us of the noble deeds of the late President especially for the poor, and inspire our people to emulate her example of selfless service to the nation while her exceptional courage and leadership gave hope and united the Filipino people at a critical time in the country's history," said Antonino.
Originally called Manila North Diversion Road and Manila North Expressway (MNEX) the NLEX is an 84-kilometer artery that connects Metro Manila to the provinces of the Central Luzon Region passing through Caloocan City and Valenzuela City in Metro Manila, Meycauayan, Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas, Guiguinto, Malolos, Plaridel and Pulilan in Bulacan, San Simon, San Fernando, Mexico, Angeles City and ends in Mabalacat City in Pampanga.
