Spied: 2017 Jaguar XF Sportbrake takes on Nurburgring

More practical XF coming soon

Following the release of the Jaguar XF sedan last year, the folks at the Coventry appear to be preparing a more practical version of their E-segment offering in the form of the Sportbrake. In Jaguar speak, Sportbrake means wagon and was previewed earlier this month during the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

The front of the XF Sportbrake is the same as the sedan and appears to be similar to the B-pillar forwards. From the B-pillar and back, it gets a different set of rear doors, more upright than the sedan. This means more headroom than its four-door counterpart and, vital for wagons, the ability to load taller items at the cargo bay. For this test mule, Jaguar put a false panel to hide the wagon's rear section but do expect a sloping roofline like the previous generation.

Inside, do expect the interior to be lifted straight from the sedan. In the sedan, the interior boasts a wraparound dash available with a wide variety of wood and aluminum trims. Its infotainment screen is available in two sizes and vary depending on the type of options selected. Like the previous generation XF, the gear selector is a rotary dial that rises when the car is started.

This being a station wagon, expect a mildly reshaped cargo floor area to maximize space. It is also likely that it will get folding rear seats to be able to load longer items in the wagon. As for the rear tailgate, the tail lights might pattern themselves with the current XF sedan which is a similar treatment to the previous generation XF Sportbrake.

The test car seen here is the more powerful S version with a supercharged 3.0 liter V6 engine. It delivers 380 PS and 450 Nm of torque delivered to either the rear wheels or all wheels. The XF S also comes with wider wheels and larger brakes capped off with red brake calipers. Other engine options include a 2.0 liter turbodiesel with 163 PS or 180 PS, a 2.0 liter turbocharged gas engine with 241 PS and a milder version of the supercharged 3.0 liter V6 that puts out 340 PS. Judging from the sedan's powertrain lineup, there will be no manual transmission available for the XF. All XF sedans are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
