BMW X2 likely to debut in a matter of weeks
BMW decided not to unveil their newest crossover, the X2, during this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. However, our spies managed to snap photos of the German brand's smallest coupe-crossover without any camouflage. We've seen patent drawings of the car and the final product remains very faithful to the photos from the past report.
With these latest photos from our spies, they reckon that the X2 is just weeks away from its official world premiere. While closely related to the X1, the X2 sees a host of changes to further separate it from its more upright sibling. With this crossover, it brings BMW's front-wheel drive-based vehicle tally to five, not including the next-generation 1 Series and the 2 Series Gran Coupe first spied a couple of weeks back.
At the front is a different take on the brand' signature kidney grille. The X2 sees its kidney grill placed in an inverted manner with the wider part at the bottom and the narrower end on top. Its headlights are noticeably different when compared to its X1 sibling. Whereas the X1's headlights are angular, the X2 sports curvier, upswept units, giving it its own identity. Also seen are the high-mounted fog lights and a slim center intake.
The X2 shows off more of its distinct lines on to its sides. For starters, the roof line is lower than the X1 and loses the third side window from the said crossover. Instead, the windows are slimmer with the window line curving upwards to make way for a more defines shoulder line. A BMW badge is also seen on the C-pillar, a design characteristic last seen in the 70's.
On to the rear, the X2's tail lights are slimmer than those found in the X1 and the rear windshield is noticeably smaller than the crossover it was based upon. The tailgate is also unique to this model with with more curves and edges. With its bolder rear fascia, the license plate holder has been moved to the bottom of the bumper. While the covers on the tail lights hides details, expect these to be LED units. Also, this color appears to be new to the BMW range as it is not offered in the current lineup.
As mentioned above, the X2 rides on a front-wheel drive platform dubbed UKL .This architecture is also used on Mini hatchbacks and crossovers. xDrive all-wheel drive is optional for the lower-end models and expect a wide range of gas and diesel engines. Expect the X2 to use the engines from the X1 and it starts with the three-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo, all the way to the 2.0-liter, turbo inline-four for gas options. As for the turbodiesels, the 2.0-liter range may be offered with varying power outputs, depending on the variant selected.
