While development for the new 2018 BMW X3 has been well underway for quite some time, our spies have only recently seen the X3 test mule sporting its new shape.

Prior encounters with the vehicle had it wearing fake body cladding to hide the vehicle’s original shape. It appears this time however, we get a glimpse of the X3 taking shape – albeit with generous amounts of camouflage blending in.

From the looks of it, the X3 really is starting to look like a 3-series body on stilts. For this new X3 at least, the crossover was meant to really share the same underpinnings as its sedan counterpart. Both will be using BMW’s upcoming CLAR platform, allowing the X3 to potentially shed 100kg of weight from its previous model.

Engine and powertrain options are still unclear, but expect to find petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options for the new X3 down the line. Likely at this point we can assume that the X3 will also eventually come with its own M version too.
