Audi prepares the next-generation Q3

In the span of three years, Audi has rolled out a range of all-new crossovers with the Q2, second-generation Q5, and the second-generation Q7. There is also the Q3 which is brand's first small crossover, first revealed in 2011. These days, it serves as oldest crossover in the range but the engineers from Ingolstadt are busy preparing the next-generation model.

Our spies have captured the car testing out in public, giving us a clearer look of Audi's upcoming crossover. At a glace, it appears that its design will be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. Its shape still stays true to the current mode but it looks like it has grown in size. That said, several Audi design signatures are present with its larger, wider 'Singleframe' grill and rectangular headlights.

Little is seen from its side but expect it the Q3 to follow the form of its larger siblings. That means doors with a high window line with character lines running across the door handles. This being an Audi 'Q' model, expect black trim surrounding the bottom half of the car. New wheel designs are also to be expected. The rear on the other hand still hides a lot of details. However, there is a glimpse of its upswept tail lights.

Being part of the Volkswagen Auto Group, the second-generation Q3 will ride on the company's flexible MQB platform. This architecture underpins both small and large cars from the Volkswagen group from the Volkswagen Polo to the Passat. Its structure will be likely to rely heavily on the Tiguan, another car that uses the MQB chassis.

According to our spies, expect the Q3 to mirror the engine choices from the Tiguan. That means a variety of turbocharged gas and diesel engines with three to four cylinders. In addition, our spies also said that they spotted a Tiguan test mule with a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, meaning an RS Q3 is also in the works. A plug-in hybrid model is reportedly being considered as well.
