BMW does further testing on the third-generation 1 Series

BMW is determined to launch 40 new models before the decade ends. As the 2020 deadline inches closer for the brand, the folks from Munich are hard at work preparing the third-generation 1 Series. After putting the car through its paces in the Nurburgring, our spies have captured the hatchback being put through its paces in extreme snow.

The most significant piece of information our spies have relayed to us refers to the body style range. For this generation of 1 Series, the three-door variant will no longer be part of the line-up. According to our spies, BMW will keep this model either as a five-door hatchback or, in the case of the Chinese market, a four-door sedan.

As for this batch of photos, there aren't significant new details being shown. It still sports rudimentary halogen headlights, as well as makeshift LED tail lights. A significant amount of false panels still hide a lot of styling details. However, it is worth pointing out that the single-exit tailpipe denotes this particular car as either an entry-level variant or a mid-spec model. Twin-exit exhausts would be reserved for more powerful iterations of the car.

The next-generation 1 Series moves to a front-wheel platform which is shared with Mini. Dubbed the UKL, it is more than likely that the Mini's engine range will make their way to the 1 Series. It starts with a turbocharged 1.5-liter, three cylinder engine with 2.0-liter turbo mills being available in various horsepower ratings. Diesels are also slated for BMW's smallest hatch with either 1.6 or 2.0-liter options. Likely transmissions are a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. XDrive all-wheel drive will also be an option.
