A closer look at the third-generation BMW 1-Series

BMW is determined to launch 40 cars before the end of the decade and part of the plan is the third-generation 1 Series. Like the M8, it too was caught testing around the Nurburgring and our spies have also managed to take photos of its interior.

As mentioned before, the next-gen BMW 1 Series will be based on the brand's front-wheel drive platform. Dubbed the UKL, the C-segment hatch shifts to front wheel drive, with all-wheel drive being an option. Once in production, BMW will have seven UKL-based cars in their line-up. At the moment, the other cars using this platform are the 2 Series Gran Tourer, 2 Series Active Tourer, X1, X2, 1 Series sedan (China only for now), and the upcoming 2 Series Gran Coupe.

These photos hide more styling details but judging from the past spy pictures, the 2019 1 Series will have the same bigger and wider kidney grill just like the rest of the BMW range. However, it is still not using production-spec headlights. That said, our spies might be able to catch a test car closer to production in the near future. This particular 1 Series also comes with adaptive cruise control as seen by a sensor at the center of the lower air intake.

Its sides are still well hidden, and so to is the rear section of the hatchback. A closer look does reveal a 'hoffmeister kink', a BMW style signature since the 60's. There's also a large integrated tailgate spoiler, upswept in the case of the car. Like the headlights, the tail lights are still not the production-spec units. As the dual exhaust pipes suggest, this may be a four-cylinder model.

Inside, it is still mostly covered but it adapts a wraparound dash and a driver-oriented center console, another BMW signature. There's also a new gear selector, similar to the 8-Series' unit. Meanwhile, the steering wheel is derived from recently revealed BMW models such as the X1, X2 ,5 Series and 7 Series. Also covered is a larger iDrive screen, likely an option for the car. At the same time, the instrument cluster is likely to use a digital display, another possible option.

Being a UKL-based car, the 1 Series will have three and four-cylinder engine options. It starts with a turbocharged 1.5-liter, three cylinder engine with 2.0-liter turbo mills being available in various horsepower ratings. Diesels are also slated for BMW's smallest hatch with either 1.6 or 2.0-liter options. Likely transmissions are a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic.
