Spied: Are we looking at the next-generation Mitsubishi Delica?

All-new Outlander-based Mitsubishi Delica caught playing in the snow

Remember when we came upon design renderings of what appears to be the all-new Mitsubishi Delica? As it turns out, the company has been indeed busy designing and testing an all-new model Delica.

According to our eagled-eyes spies, what we’re seeing is the all-new Delica D:5 being tested in cold weather conditions. Immediately noticeable on the prototype van is its distinct styling that appears to have been borrowed from the Xpander MPV. Up front, it gets the same ‘two-level’ headlight design with the bottom section sporting halogens. Meanwhile, the top portion appears to house the van’s LED daytime running lights and turn signal indicators.

Despite the heavy camouflage, we do get to see its wide front grill and prominent hood. Gone, however, are the muscular wheel arches which were originally found on the design renderings. Also toned down is its rear fascia as Mitsubishi appeared to have opted to give it a more traditional design instead of having an Xpander-inspired look.

Apparently, the all-new Delica D:5 will ride on a new version of the Outlander platform. It will only be available with 4WD and will come with Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC). As for its powertrain, it will reportedly be driven by a newly-developed 2.2-liter turbo-diesel that is expected to produce 170 PS. Transmission options remain to be revealed however.

With the fifth-generation Delica receiving a major redesign way back in 2007, it’s no surprise Mitsubishi plans to release an all-new model of the van. The all-new Delica could make its world debut some time in late 2018.
