Spied: BMW drops more cover on the 2018 X2

2018 BMW X2 caught with less camoflague

With BMW announcing 40 new models within two years, the engineers from Bavaria are hard at work in development. One of these models is the X2 and our spies caught it with fewer covers. Photos of prototype X2s were seen a few months ago but now, there's a clearer view of the front fascia.

The car seen here is likely to be the M Sport model with its honeycomb trim and deep chin spoiler. We also get a better look at the headlights which are noticeably different from the ones found in the X1. Also different is the shape of the hood, further differentiating it from it's more upright sibling. Of course, there's also the signature BMW kidney grill. From these photos, it appears that the X2 might not have the X1's bumper-mounted foglight design.

As for the rest of the car, it looks like the production X2 will remain faithful to the concept's design. BMW previewed their smallest crossover coupe in concept form during last year's Paris Motor Show. In tune with BMW's current number nomenclature, the X2 will serve as a sleeker version of the X1, as seen with the more rakish roof line. As for the rear, it is still mostly covered but do expect a sportier variation of the signature L-shaped tail lights.

Our spies report that the X2 gets the codename F39. A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo gas engine will make its way under the hood of the crossover coupe and will be badged sDrive28i and xDrive28i. Our spies also said that a more powerful engine will be available for the X2 and will likely be badged xDrive35i. It is still unknown if this will get a turbocharged six-cylinder or an uprated version of the boosted inline-four.

Expect the 2018 BMW X2 to be fully revealed later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
