Spied: BMW X7 endures cold weather testing

New BMW seven-seater SUV eyes Range Rover, Mercedes GLS

With their eyes set on the premium SUV range, BMW is now conducting cold weather tests for the upcoming X7. Intended to stack against the Range Rover and the Mercedes GLC, the X7 will offer seating for seven as well as copious amounts of space.

As with the X5 and the 7-series before it, the X7 will be based off the CLAR platform as well. Given the larger dimensions of the X7 though, we may likely see an extended or stretched version of the platform. The X7 may find itself powered by either six or eight cylinder motors – both in petrol and diesel – as well as a plug-in hybrid option down the line.

The prototype our spies have identified bears a large version of BMW’s signature kidney grille. Judging from its shape, it may also receive the ‘upside down’ look of the grille as found in the X2 concept. The front fascia may end up having a stark difference from the X5 in order for clients to distinguish the appearance of both SUVs. The rear doors of the X7 appear to be larger as well. These match the longer overhang which will definitely yield bigger space and better accessibility for rear passengers.

Production for the X7 is set in 2018 at BMW’s Spartanburg and USA plants, which means the X7 will probably hit showroom floors sometime in 2019.
