Despite rumors floating about regarding Kia’s introduction of a small SUV, there have been no clear-cut evidence of the said vehicle in development – until now.

Spied: Kia Stonic SUV prototype now in development

Since Hyundai have confirmed plans to develop a B-Segment SUV, it’s safe to assume that Kia will likely follow suit with their own variation of the model. While Hyundai have yet to drop hints on their vehicle, our spies have identified a small Kia SUV prototype out conducting tests in Northern Sweden. Currently the rumored name of this vehicle will supposedly be ‘Stonic’, though no evidence suggests that name will certainly make it to the finished product.

The small SUV appears to bear the aesthetics of the Kia Rio underneath all its camouflage. This is no surprise as this vehicle may well be based off the Rio’s platform to begin with. Powertrain details are scarce at the moment, as we are yet to be sure if this will be offered in AWD. Our sources indicate however that the Stonic may become available with a range of turbo powerplants.

The Stonic is rumored to make its debut during the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, with sales commencing shortly afterwards. The US on the other hand may see this vehicle towards the end of the year, likely after its stateside debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
